Following its award at the Gdynia Film Festival (Young Jury Award for Best Film) and its success at the Slamdance Film Festival, Kuba Czekaj’s new film, THE ERLPRINCE, will be screened in European Premiere at the BERLIN FILM FESTIVAL which takes place from 9 to 19 February 2017.

After the award-winning BABY BUMP screened at the Venice Film Festival – Biennale College in 2015, THE ERLPRINCE (Krolewicz Olch) is the second feature by Polish director Kuba Czekaj. The film will be screened in the Generation 14plus competition at the Berlinale.

THE ERLPRINCE is the story of an exceptionally gifted teenage boy who has just started studying physics at university. He is working on the theory of parallel worlds, which he initially believes to be linked by light. He has an extraordinary mind and a wounded soul, which his authoritarian Mother, who steers his life, is incapable of healing. Then a Man appears in their lives and, as the Boy passes from the hands of the Mother into his care, a new order is established. Their torturous road forms a bond between the three central characters, but their shared happiness is not to last long. Approaching a solution to the problem of the passage between the worlds, the Boy initiates a journey, setting his life on the scales…

THE ERLPRINCE stars Staszek Cywka, Agnieszka Podsiadlik, Sebastian Łach, Bernhard Schütz, Bogusława Jantos, Emilia Stachurska, James Fordham and Anna Podolak.

The film is produced by Studio Munka-Stowarzyszenie and Filmowców Polskich in co-production with Telewizja Polska, Odra Film, Studio Produkcyjne Orka and co-financed by Polish Film Institute.

Born in Wrocław in 1984, Kuba Czekaj graduated in directing from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty at the University of Silesia in Katowice in 2010 and from the Development Lab Feature Programme at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warsaw in 2011. He received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage on two occasions, in 2009 and 2011, and has been honoured with the title of Third Programme Talent, a  distinction conferred by Polish Radio’s Trojka (Third Programme). He has won the Gazeta Wyborcza (Electoral Gazette) Worth cultural award and the Cultural Guarantee award from TVP Kultura, the Polish public television broadcasting corporation’s cultural channel. He also holds the Rector of the University of Silesia's award for active students and doctoral candidates.

He directed two award-winning short films DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK ROOM and TWIST & BLOOD. His debut feature BABY BUMP premiered at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, winning the Queer Lion Award Special Mention, and won the Award for Artistic Achievement at Outfest in Los Angeles. Kuba’s latest feature THE ERLPRINCE had been presented in the main competition at Gdynia Film Festival, winning the Young Jury Award for Best Film.  The film will have its North American premiere at Slamdance Film Festival and European premiere at the forthcoming Berlinale.

Berlinale 2017: International Jury

Once again an illustrious International Jury will decide who will receive the Golden and Silver Bears at the Berlinale 2017. Eighteen films are vying in this year’s Competition for the Golden and the Silver Bears. The winners will be announced at the Berlinale Palast on February 18.

Director and screenwriter Paul Verhoeven will serve as Jury President (see press release from December 9, 2016). The other members of the International Jury are producer Dora Bouchoucha Fourati (Tunisia), artist Olafur Eliasson (Iceland), actress  Maggie Gyllenhaal (USA), actress Julia Jentsch (Germany), actor and director Diego Luna (Mexico), and director and screenwriter Wang Quan'an (People’s Republic of China).

Paul Verhoeven, Jury President, Director, Screenwriter (The Netherlands)

The Dutch director and screenwriter Paul Verhoeven began his directing career in 1969 with the successful Dutch television series Floris. After his feature film debut Business is Business in 1971, came the erotic thriller Turkish Delight in 1973, a big hit in the Netherlands that also garnered a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 1974 Academy Awards. Following his international breakthrough Soldier of Orange (1977) and The Fourth Man (1983), Paul Verhoeven moved to Hollywood to focus on an evolution of style in his work. Large productions featuring lots of action and special effects, like RoboCop (1987), and especially Total Recall (1990), were big box-office hits that revolutionised the science fiction film genre while maintaining credibility as auteur films. The provocative, erotic thriller Basic Instinct (1992), which was nominated for two Academy Awards, saw Paul Verhoeven return to themes prevalent in his Dutch works. In 1997 and 2000, he once again focused on science fiction with Starship Troopers and Hollow Man. After nearly 20 years in Hollywood, Paul Verhoeven returned to the Netherlands in 2006 to film Black Book (2006). Starting in 2007, he moved his attention to writing. In 2016 he returned to the screen with Elle, which not only won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture in the category Foreign Language, but also earned Isabelle Huppert the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama.

Dora Bouchoucha Fourati, Producer (Tunisia)

Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha Fourati is something of an institution in the film world. The English literature graduate started off as a teacher and translator of screenplays. In 1992, she launched the Carthage Film Festival “Projects' Workshop” to assist Arabs and Africans in developing their scripts and the follow-up initiative “Takmil” to support post-production in 2014. In 1995, she founded her own production company Nomadis Images. The many fiction and documentary features, and short films she has produced and co-produced include: Raja Amari’s multiple award-winning Satin Rouge (2002), Barakat! (dir: Djamila Sahraoui, Berlinale Forum 2006), Raja Amari’s Buried Secrets (2009) and Foreign Body (Berlinale Forum 2017). She produced all of Mohamed Ben Attia’s short films and his full-length debut Hedi, which screened in the Berlinale Competition in 2016 and won the Best First Feature Award and Silver Bear for Best Actor (Majd Mastoura). Dora Bouchoucha also founded the screenwriting workshop SUD ECRITURE for Arab and African scripts in 1997 which has launched many award winning films to date. She was festival director of the Carthage Film Festival in 2008, 2010, and 2014. She was appointed president of the Fonds Sud Cinéma of the CNC in 2010; and president of the follow-up institution, Aide aux Cinemas du Monde, in 2014.

Olafur Eliasson, Artist (Iceland)

Born in Denmark of Icelandic parentage, Olafur Eliasson quickly garnered international attention after completing the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He participated in the Berlin Biennale in 1998 and the Venice Biennale in 2003, and his piece “The weather project”, which was installed in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern, attracted over two million visitors. Today, with his sculptures, installations, paintings, photographs and films that often focus on physical phenomena in nature as well as climate change, he has become one of the world’s most important contemporary artists. Eliasson, who founded his studio in Berlin in 1995, has received countless awards. Besides being involved in art, he is the founder of a global sustainable energy project and social business called Little Sun, as well as the international architectural firm Studio Other Spaces. His latest artworks include a number of installations at the Palace of Versailles in 2016.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Actress (USA)

Celebrated American actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the outstanding talents of her generation. After studying literature at Columbia University in New York and acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, she became known for her roles in Donnie Darko (dir: Richard Kelly, 2001) and in Spike Jonze’s Berlinale Competition entry Adaptation (2002). Her big breakthrough came when she played the lead in the film Secretary (dir: Steven Shainberg, 2002). For it she received her first Golden Globe nomination and won several awards, including an IFP/Gotham Award for Breakthrough Performance. She went on to star in, e.g., Mike Newell’s Mona Lisa Smile (2003), Marc Forster’s Stranger than Fiction (2006), Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center (2006), Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008), Sam Mendes’s Away We Go (2009), and Roland Emmerich’s White House Down (2013). For her role in Scott Cooper’s Crazy Heart (2009) she was nominated for an Oscar. In 2014 she headlined the British TV series The Honourable Woman, for which she garnered a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination. Gyllenhaal, who in recent years has performed on Broadway, is currently cast to star in The Deuce, a new HBO series that she is also producing.

Julia Jentsch, Actress (Germany)

After finishing her studies at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts, Julia Jentsch, who was born in Berlin, began her career on the stage. In 2002 “Theater heute” magazine rated her the best female debut of the year. Her breakthrough on the screen was in The Edukators (2004, dir: Hans Weingartner) and in Sophie Scholl – The Final Days (Berlinale Competition 2005), for which she won not only the Berlinale’s Silver Bear, but also both the German and European Film Awards. The film itself, which was directed by Marc Rothemund, was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Since then Julia Jentsch has starred in a number of works, including 33 Scenes from Life by Polish director Małgorzata Szumowska, Hannah Arendt by Margarethe von Trotta, and I Served the King of England by Jiří Menzel. With Effie Briest (Berlinale Special 2009, dir: Hermine Huntgeburth) and 24 Weeks (Berlinale Competition 2016; dir: Anne Zohra Berrached), Jentsch was again invited to the Berlinale. Most recently she performed in front of the camera in Hans-Christian Schmid’s mini-series Das Verschwinden, which will be released in 2017.

Diego Luna, Actor, Director (Mexico)

Diego Luna’s breakthrough role came with Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también, for which he shared the Marcello Mastroianni Award with Gael García Bernal at the Venice Film Festival in 2001. His feature film acting credits include Frida (dir. Julie Taymor, 2002), The Terminal (dir: Steven Spielberg, 2004), Rudo y Cursi (dir: Carlos Cuarón, 2008), Milk (dir: Gus van Sant, Berlinale Panorama 2009), Contraband (dir: Baltasar Kormákur, 2012) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (dir: Gareth Edwards, 2016). Next fall he will star in Flatliners (dir: Niels Arden Oplev). Luna’s directorial debut, titled Abel, premiered at the film festival in Cannes in 2010. This was followed by César Chávez (BerlinaleSpecial 2014) and Mr. Pig, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016. He and Bernal co-founded “Ambulante” in 2005, a charity organization dedicated, among other things, to promoting documentary film. Luna is also a member of the board of the Washington Office on Latin America.

Wang Quan’an, Director, Screenwriter (People’s Republic of China)

The director and screenwriter trained first as an actor before he turned to filmmaking. After studying at the Beijing Film Academy, Wang Quan'an, who was born in Yan'an in Shaanxi province, presented his debut film Lunar Eclipse in 1999. It screened in the Berlinale's Forum section in 2002 after making various award-winning appearances at festivals around the world. He was selected with Tuya's Marriage for the Competition in 2007 and, as the third Chinese filmmaker in the festival's history, won the Golden Bear. Three years later, Apart Together was chosen as the Berlinale's opening film and went on to win the Silver Bear for Best Script, which Wang co-wrote with Jin Na. He returned to the Berlinale Competition in 2012 with White Deer Plain, an adaptation of the historical novel of the same name, where his director of photography, Lutz Reitemeier, won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution.

Berlinale 2017: An Honorary Golden Bear and Homage for Oscar-winner Milena Canonero

$

The Homage of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival is dedicated to Italian costume designer Milena Canonero, who will also receive an Honorary Golden Bear for her lifetime achievement.

Milena Canonero is one of the world’s most celebrated costume designers. She has worked with a long list of directors, including Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, Sydney Pollack, Warren Beatty, Roman Polanski, Steven Soderbergh, Louis Malle, Tony Scott, Barbet Schroeder, Sofia Coppola, and Wes Anderson. Over the years she has won four Academy Awards for her outstanding costume designs and been nominated five other times.

“Milena Canonero is an extraordinary costume designer. With her designs she has contributed decisively to the style of many cinematic masterpieces. With this year’s Homage, we would like to honour a great artist as well as direct attention to another film profession,” says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.

Milena Canonero’s designs result from extensive art historical research and sophisticated concepts. She never just adopts parameters from fashion history but adapts them creatively for each movie. In doing so she excels not only in the art of subtly accentuating a character’s personality but also in enhancing the texture of a film through very detailed and original designs. Her creations have influenced global fashion trends and inspired fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen and Ralph Lauren.

Right at the beginning of her career Canonero met Stanley Kubrick and it was for his film A Clockwork Orange (United Kingdom / USA 1971) that she designed her first film costumes. With them white lost its innocence and set a new benchmark for costume design. Already with her second work for Kubrick, Barry Lyndon (United Kingdom / USA 1975), she took home her first Academy Award for Best Costume Design (shared with Ulla-Britt Söderlund).

Next came Kubrick’s The Shining (United Kingdom / USA 1980) and Hugh Hudson’s Chariots of Fire (United Kingdom 1981), for which she received her second Academy Award, as well as Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club (USA 1984) and Sydney Pollack’s Out of Africa (United Kingdom / USA 1985).

For Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part III (USA 1990), Milena Canonero took inspiration from the painters of the Renaissance. She made use of both subdued dark hues and striking colour compositions. In the same year, Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy (USA 1990) was completed. For it Canonero drew on classic cuts from 1930s fashion, while referencing the original comic strip by choosing clear bright colours for the fabrics of the costumes. She limited herself to the three primary colours, plus black and white, as well as five mixed colours – and used them consistently throughout the film for all the costumes and accessories.

For Barbet Schroeder’s Single White Female (USA 1992), Milena Canonero was not only responsible for the costumes, but also for the production design. Later she received her third Academy Award for the pastel and candy-coloured garments in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (France / Japan / USA 2006).

In past years Milena Canonero has participated in the Berlinale with two films directed by Wes Anderson - The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (USA 2004) and The Grand Budapest Hotel (USA / Germany 2014). For her extraordinary purple and mauve hotel staff uniforms, and the fanciful design of Madame D.’s gown from The Grand Budapest Hotel, Milena Canonero won her fourth Academy Award for Best Costume Design.

“What is also so impressive about Milena Canonero is the versatility of her artistic interests. Her costume designs for productions at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, and the Vienna State Opera, as well as for Roman Polanski’s stage adaptation of Amadeus have brought her international recognition and success too,” comments Rainer Rother, Head of the Retrospective and Homage and Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kinemathek.

In addition Milena Canonero recently co-produced the film Romeo & Juliet (United Kingdom / Italy / Switzerland 2013) by Carlo Carlei, and finished directing her first commercial. Currently she is developing a documentary about the costume and production designer Piero Tosi.

The presentation of the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlinale Palast on February 16, 2017 will be accompanied by a screening of the film The Shining (United Kingdom / USA 1980) by Stanley Kubrick.

The ten films in the Homage are:

Barry Lyndon (United Kingdom / USA 1975, director: Stanley Kubrick)

Chariots of Fire (United Kingdom 1981, director: Hugh Hudson)

A Clockwork Orange (United Kingdom / USA 1971, director: Stanley Kubrick)

The Cotton Club (USA 1984, director: Francis Ford Coppola)

Dick Tracy (USA 1990, director: Warren Beatty)

The Godfather. Part III (USA 1990, director: Francis Ford Coppola)

The Grand Budapest Hotel (USA / Germany 2014, director: Wes Anderson)

Berlinale Camera 2017 for Nansun Shi, Geoffrey Rush and Samir Farid

Since 1986 the Berlin International Film Festival has presented the Berlinale Camera to film personalities or institutions to which it feels particularly indebted and wishes to express its thanks.

At the 67th Berlin International Film Festival, three personalities will be awarded the Berlinale Camera: film producer and distributor Nansun Shi (Hong Kong, China), actor Geoffrey Rush (Australia), and film critic and author Samir Farid (Egypt).

Nansun Shi, Producer, Distributor (Hong Kong, China)

Nansun Shi is one of the most important and influential producers and distributors of the international film world. In the 1970s, following her studies in statistics and computer science in London, and before starting her career as a film producer, she was engaged in the field of television in Hong Kong. In 1984, after working as executive director for Cinema City Studios for a number of years, Nansun Shi and renowned director Tsui Hark, founded Film Workshop, their own production company. It wasn’t long before its name was equated with hits at the box office. Their biggest international successes in this period include A Better Tomorrow (1986) by John Woo; Once Upon a Time in China (1991) with Jet Li, and Seven Swords (2005), both of which were directed by Tsui Hark. Produced in 2002, the multiple prize-winning thriller Infernal Affairs was the film on which Martin Scorsese based TheDeparted (2006). In addition, as co-founder of Distribution Workshop, she was committed to her role as distributor of Chinese-language films. She was also the Vice Chairman of the Media Asia Group, one of the largest Asian film studios. In 2011 she served on the jury of the International Film Festival in Cannes, and in 2014 she received the Best Independent Producer Award in Locarno. In 2013 the French government honoured Nansun with the title of Officier de I’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres; in 2015 the Udine Far East Film Festival, with the Golden Mulberry Life Time Achievement Award.

She has close ties with the Berlinale: in 2007 she was a member of the International Jury, and since then has been a regular guest at the Festival. In 2011 she presented Late Autumn (dir: Kim Tae-Yong) in the Forum; and in 2012 Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (dir: Tsui Hark) in the Competition section, where it screened out of competition. Most recently, she produced The Taking of Tiger Mountain, which was a big hit in China.

Nansun Shi will be awarded the Berlinale Camera in the cinema at the Martin-Gropius-Bau at 12.30 pm on Friday, February 10, 2017. Fred Tsui will give a speech in her honour. First awarded in 2016, this prestigious prize will now be presented annually to an outstanding producer.

Geoffrey Rush, Actor (Australia)

For over 40 years, Geoffrey Rush has been recognized as one of the world’s most remarkable character actors. He is equally at home on stage and screen. The Australian is among the few to have ever won the “Triple Crown of Acting”: the Emmy, Oscar, and Tony – as well as countless other awards for his performances. He has starred in eight films presented at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Rush made his stage debut when he was just 20. In the following years, he developed an extraordinary repertoire of classical theatre roles. He first performed on screen in 1981. For his tour-de-force portrayal of the highly dysfunctional but brilliant pianist David Helfgott in Shine (dir: Scott Hicks, 1996), he won an Academy Award. He also received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for two period dramas, Shakespeare in Love (dir: John Madden) and Quills (dir: Philip Kaufman), and participated with them in the Berlinale Competition in 1999 and 2001 respectively. Rush starred in The Tailor of Panama (dir: John Boorman), which was also screened in the 2001 Competition. In 2003, he portrayed Captain Hector Barbossa, one of the villains in Pirates of the Caribbean (dir: Gore Verbinski), for the first time. The huge international success of this adventure film led to three sequels – in all of them Rush plays the roguish Captain.

In 2006, Rush returned to the Berlinale Competition, appearing in the drug film Candy (dir: Neil Armfield). In 2011, he could be seen in the Berlinale Special, in Tom Hooper’s touching drama The King’s Speech. Among many other prizes, he received the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for this film. Rush’s most recent appearance at the Festival was in 2013 when he presented the thriller The Best Offer by Giuseppe Tornatore in the Berlinale Special.

In this year’s Competition programme he is playing the lead in Stanley Tucci’s Final Portrait (out of competition). Geoffrey Rush will be awarded the Berlinale Camera at the Berlinale Palast at 7.00 pm on Saturday, February 11, 2017.

Samir Farid, Film Critic, Author (Egypt)

Samir Farid is one of the most eminent film critics and authors of the Arab world. As an expert on cinema, his advice and opinions are in demand worldwide. As a film critic he has accompanied the Berlinale for decades.

He first trained his sharp eye for film during his studies at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts at the Academy of Arts in Cairo. In 1965 he began his career as a critic at the Egyptian daily Al-Gomhoreya, where he worked for 38 years. During this period, he co-founded the National Festival of Short and Documentary Films (1970), the National Festival of Feature Films (1971), as well as the Egyptian Film Critics Association (1972). Berlinale Goes Kiez: The Festival in Neighbourhood Cinemas

Once again the Berlinale Goes Kiez special series is bringing the glamour of the festival to Berlin’s very diverse neighbourhoods and the city of Potsdam. The Berlinale will screen at seven select arthouse cinemas known for participating in and contributing to cultural life in their respective neighbourhoods.

In Neukölln a new cinema - w o l f - will be opening its doors for the first time with the Berlinale. And in the Wrangelkiez, one of Kreuzberg’s most upbeat neighbourhoods, the Red Carpet will again be rolled out at the newly converted and enlarged EISZEIT cinema.

From February 11 to 17, 2017, a selection of films from the official Berlinale programme will be shown in neighbourhoods, ranging from Berlin-Weißensee to beyond the city limits in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Each evening one arthouse cinema will be turned into a festival venue.

Members of film teams have already announced their intention to present their works personally and discuss them with audiences after the screenings. At each neighbourhood cinema a prominent film personality will serve as its patron.

The Berlinale Goes Kiez series will also begin with the official opening film of this year’s Berlinale. Django (Competition) by Etienne Comar will kick off the evening at the Bundesplatz-Kino in Wilmersdorf. Local moviegoers can expect a long and interesting evening, as shortly before midnight a film from the Berlinale Classics programme will be presented as well: the digitally restored version of George A. Romero’s horror classic Night of the Living Dead.

For the first time NATIVe, the Berlinale special series on Indigenous cinema, has been invited to participate in Berlinale Goes Kiez. At the EISZEIT cinema in Kreuzberg, two films from Canada will represent this year’s special region of focus, the Artic.

At the  w o l f  in Neukölln, Berlinale Goes Kiez and Berlinale Talents will launch their first collaboration. In public talks titled “Local Heroes: Community Cinema Reloaded”, innovative international cinema operators will discuss with the audience ways to curate, finance, and involve the neighbourhood in local movie theatres.

Festival Director Dieter Kosslick: “Our ‘local heroes’ are neighbourhood cinemas in Berlin and Brandenburg that are open to topics important to the community and foster an on-going dialogue through the stories presented on their screens.”

Advance sales start on February 6, 2017; tickets will also be available at the respective cinemas.

Film

Beginning one year before the fatal police shooting of a Black teenager in nearby Ferguson, Missouri, FOR AHKEEM is the coming-of-age story of Daje Shelton, a Black 17-year-old girl in North St. Louis. She fights for her future as she is placed in an alternative high school and navigates the marginalized neighborhoods, biased criminal justice policies and economic devastation that have set up many Black youth like her to fail.

After she is expelled from her public high school, a juvenile court judge sends Daje to the court-supervised Innovative Concept Academy, which offers her one last chance to earn a diploma. Over two years we watch as Daje struggles to maintain focus in school, attends the funerals of friends killed around her, falls in love with a classmate named Antonio, and navigates a loving-but-tumultuous relationship with her mother.

As Antonio is drawn into the criminal justice system and events in Ferguson just four miles from her home seize the national spotlight, Daje learns she is pregnant and must contend with the reality of raising a young Black boy.

Through Daje’s intimate coming of age story, FOR AHKEEM illuminates challenges that many Black teenagers face in America today, and witnesses the strength, resilience, and determination it takes to survive.

FOR AHKEEM is according to the Filmmaker Magazine one of the most anticipated films of 2017.

HOME by Daniel Mulloy nominated for BAFTA

HOME, a short film written and directed by award winning director Daniel Mulloy and starring Jack O'Connell and Holliday Grainger, is a UK / Kosovo co-production that has been nominated for the Best British Short at this years British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA).

The film, initially released on World Refugee Day, is a 20-minute short focused on themes of war and migration, that looks to bring the refugee crisis one-step closer to home for those living outside its reach. This intimate, thought-provoking short used its absurd premise and shifting dynamics to connect its audience deeply with the plight of the many migrant families around the world, currently fleeing war zones in search of a safer life.

The film's message of empathy is particularly poignant at this time. HOME is produced by Dokufest, Black Sheep Studios and Somesuch.

THE EX-WIFE by Katja Wik

SWEDEN, 2017 // COMEDY - DRAMA // 90min // COMPLETED // MARKET DEBUT

WORLD PREMIERE // GÖTEBORG INT FILM FEST 2017 // COMPETITION DRAGON AWARD
SWEDISH RELEASE ON FEB 17th (TriArt Film).

From award winning "Force Majeure" producer, an accurate satire of the process of life—from falling in love to divorce.

With: Maria Sundbom, Nina Zanjani, Ellen Olaison, Robin Keller, Karl Linnertorp

Klara has recently fallen in love and wants nothing more than to hang out with her boyfriend. The mother-of-two Anna clocks how long it takes for her husband to cook baby formula. The ex-wife Vera can't let go of her ex-husband. The feature-film debuting Katja Wik presents a squib right on the money about women's tendency to, both consciously and unconsciously, limit themselves in their close relationships of two. Each frame conveys the film's theme of power manipulation and Katja Wik's neologism "victim-mentality rhetoric" (offerrollsretorik) is used by all parties as an effective weapon. Without stagnating in bitterness, The Ex-wife serves as a funhouse mirror reflecting this disturbing trait, which most of us can recognize, but which few dare to acknowledge.

DIM THE FLUORESCENTS by Daniel Warth
CANADA, 2017 // COMEDY-DRAMA // 128min // COMPLETED // MARKET DEBUT

2017 Slamdance Film Festival World Premiere -  Narrative Feature Grand Jury Prize

With: Naomi Skwarna and Claire Armstrong

Struggling actor Audrey (Claire Armstrong) and aspiring playwright Lillian (Naomi Skwarna) pour all of their creative energy into the only paying work they can find: corporate role-playing demonstrations. When they book the biggest gig of their careers at a hotel conference, they commence work on their most ambitious production to date and the ensuing tensions threaten to derail both the production and their friendship. As wryly funny as it is unexpectedly poignant, DIM THE FLUORESCENTS is a one-of-a-kind portrait of the artistic life and process in the unlikeliest of settings.

“It’s empathetic, weird and insanely funny,” said the Slamdance jurors. “This film delivers its crazy script with guts and panache. It’s a delight — beautifully executed and smart as a whip.” Variety

POLAND, 2016 // LIGHT DRAMA // 78min // COMPLETED // MARKET PREMIERE

A FULL-LENGTH FEATURE DEBUT BY THE WINNER OF THE SHORT FILM GRAND JURY PRIZE AT THE 2013 SUNDANCE FESTIVAL!

With: Daniel Furmaniak, Anna Kesek, Katarzyna Kopec, Artur Krajewski

Ania and Kasia are at the end of their schooling as women's hairdressers. They're now doing an internship at a salon in the most disparaged district of Krakow, Nowa Huta, which was built in the received Stalinist style near a steel plant at the beginning of the 1950s. Both Ania and Kasia have complicated relationships with their parents—relationships that are not exactly simplified as the girls approach adulthood.

An authentic, endearing, small, beautifully formed feature debut with this bittersweet snapshot of frustrated Polish youth. Variety

Waves is a compelling and accomplished piece of work, and is indicative that Zariczny will be a talent to watch closely over the coming years. Cineuropa

Synopsis:

Deep in the heart of New York's ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, Menashe, a kind, hapless grocery store clerk, struggles to make ends meet and responsibly parent his young son, Rieven (Ruben Niborski) following his wife Leah's death. Tradition prohibits Menashe from raising his son alone, so Rieven's strict uncle adopts him, leaving Menashe heartbroken. Meanwhile, though Menashe seems to bungle every challenge in his path, his rabbi grants him one special week with Rieven before Leah's memorial. It's his chance to prove himself a suitable man of faith and fatherhood, and restore respect among his doubters.

Performed entirely in Yiddish, the colloquial language of the Hasidic community, Menashe uses intimate, handheld camerawork to drop us inside and humanize a hermetically sealed world of black-hatted, working-class men debating in crowded shuls or seeking counsel in the rabbi's library. And yet Menashe is in many ways an outsider in this tight-knit circle, as he bucks convention and ruffles feathers to stay true to himself.
