SciFi projects Taking Earth and Teleios bound to Berlin with Empress Road

Empress Road Pictures President, Galen Christy, and CEO, Faisal Toor, announced today a deal to sell World Wide distribution rights for the sci-fi features TAKING EARTH and TELEIOS at Berlinale. Empress Road will be selling the films at EFM'16 from February 11 to the 19th.

TAKING EARTH is a science-fiction/action epic filmed on location in South Africa. It was directed by up-and-comer Grant Humphreys and stars Ronan Quarmby.

TAKING EARTH follows the human race being thrown into chaos as an alien invasion takes control of the planet in an effort to find one boy out of 7 billion people who holds the power to destroy them.

The film was produced by Grant Knight and Michael Harrison.

The second picture is TELEIOS, directed by Ian Truitner (CUTTING ROOM). It stars Sunny Mabrey (SNAKES ON A PLANE, XXX: STATE OF THE UNION), Lance Broadway (OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN, Lucifer), and Christian Pitre (CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, BOUNTY KILLER).

TELEIOS follows five genetically engineered "perfect" humans on a rescue mission to Titan, where only one man has survived a ruined expedition to retrieve a vital cargo.

"These films prove how far independent films have advanced over the years. Taking Earth and Teleios are on trend with exactly what moviegoers everywhere want during a time when films like STAR WARS and STAR TREK are blowing up the box and INDEPENDENCE DAY releasing this year. We are so excited to announce both of these incredible films for sale at EFM'16" says Christy. Toor adds, "These pictures have everything: action, science fiction intrigue, mind-blowing special effects... everything! Berlin won't be able to contain the excitement for these two pictures!'"

About Empress Road:

Faisal Toor who previously worked at Arclight Pictures and Galen Christy who previously worked at CAA began Empress Road Pictures as a way of cultivating relationships with distributors, talent agencies, and various strategic entertainment partnerships in order to sell a slate of commercially viable motion pictures. Empress Road provides full service to our filmmakers, helping them secure distribution for completed films and, in certain cases, financing for projects in development. Empress Road Pictures has secured sales in over 50 countries and have sold films with budgets ranging from $500K to as high as $15 Million. www.EmpressRoad.com

NO FUTURE WITHOUT A PAST – Save Your Place in Film History!
A discussion on feminism, diversity and film archives on the occasion of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival

18 February 2016 - Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth / Berlin

Who decides today what we will remember tomorrow?
What are the ways and means to secure the place of women film-makers in the history of film?
How to resist canon? Join in the discussion. Get Networked Up!

The world-wide debate as to gender equality in the film industry is thriving and the demands for quotas are beginning to show first results. But what happens to the films made by female directors after the cinema release or TV broadcast? Indeed, some pioneering female film-makers of the past are still hardly known, their names rarely appearing in any best-of list. They get marginal consideration on media studies courses at the universities. When it comes to digitisation processes, provision for copies of their 35-mm films is not always top of the agenda. Especially within the framework of digitisation, it is important to ensure that the legacy of women film-makers is not lost. The artistic achievements and visions of female directors of the silent-movie era to the present day must be preserved for future generations.

Welcome
Dr Ralf Kleindiek (State Secretary, Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth)'

VITA ACTIVA, THE SPIRIT OF HANNAH ARENDT

Hannah Arendt caused a great uproar in the 1960s

by coining the subversive concept of "banality of evil" when referring to the Nazi evil. Her private life was no less controversial thanks to her love affair with a renowned German philosopher and Nazi supporter Martin Heidegger. She was one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century who both lived through and wrote about the open wounds of modern times. Arendt's insights about the nature of evil, the plight of refugees and dangers of any ideology sound today more relevant than ever. The deep humanistic message at the core of her thinking is no less relevant. HAPPY PURIM

Purim is the happiest day in the Jewish calendar.

The film goes to the heart of the spirit of the festival: the injunction to have fun and revel is carried to full measure (and includes some good drinking tips). Ultra-Orthodox Jews are famously as strict about observing the rules of their faith as they are defiant

to modernity, yet for this film they let the cameras explore their celebration with enthusiasm.

Languages & The Media Conference in Berlin this November

The new mediascape is cross-platform, on-demand and multilingual

Across all sectors, personalised, on-demand service is no longer a luxury, but an expectation. When consuming media, users are looking for accessible, quality content across all platforms, at all times, in all languages. For the audiovisual translation sector this presents a huge challenge, but also a great opportunity. Never before has there been such high demand for professional media translation services, but these new times also call for new methods, new approaches and new thinking.

At the 11th biennial Languages & The Media Conference, international experts will meet to discuss the most recent developments impacting audiovisual translation and explore the methods that will allow us to navigate and conquer the new agile mediascape.

New technology, better Internet access, and an influx of on-demand streaming services have made it easier than ever to access content from around the world. These advances and the rapidity with which they’ve become part of the environment, however, pose a challenge to the field of translation: How can the industry remain agile with surging demand for round-the-clock media? At the eleventh annual Languages & The Media conference, delegates will discuss the challenges, opportunities and most recent developments impacting audiovisual translation and teaching. The conference takes place November 2 - 4, 2016, at Hotel Radisson Blu in central Berlin, Germany.

The theme, Agile Mediascapes - Personalising the Future, will guide discussions in the workshops and conference presentations. With easy access to sophisticated technologies and expectations for instantaneous results, consumers have become more than simply an audience. As full access to audiovisual media becomes the top priority, communities of amateur translators have emerged and ‘prosumers’ are taking charge of content creation, mediation and online distribution in this new networked participatory culture. Amateur translation processes and the mainstream adoption of technologies such as cloud storage, digital transmission, machine translation, and voice recognition, amongst others, raise legal, quality, usability implications – and new job profiles.

Under this overall theme, discussions at the conference will explore the new professional landscape for audiovisual media, the potential that interdisciplinary research holds for the sector, and the challenges that lie ahead.

Languages & The Media has a track record as a productive meeting place for decision makers and language and media practitioners from science, academia, and business, and this year’s agenda is certain to appeal to distributors of audiovisual media products and services, broadcasters, producers, film festival organisers, software and website developers, translators, subtitling and dubbing companies, and language industry specialists. As in the past, the 2016 edition’s exhibition will provide an exhibition for producers, vendors, and service providers to showcase their latest translation technology, subtitling systems, mobile devices, and communication tools to a well-informed, tightly focused group of committed professionals.

The call for papers is open now and proposals can be submitted until Wednesday, April 30, 2016. For more information on how you can be part of this year’s Languages & The Media, please visit www.languages-media.com.

TIGER stars Mickey Rourke (IRON MAN 2, THE WRESTLER), Janel Parrish (PRETTY LITTLE LIARS), Prem Singh (BREAKAWAY). It tells the inspirational true story of Pardeep Singh Nagra, a Sikh man who was banned from the sport of boxing for refusing to back down from his beliefs. With immense support from his head coach and mentor, Pardeep does what any strong-willed person would do: fight back! But in the fallout from his decision to fight the ruling, he receives a barrage of threats. His friends and family are afraid the fight for justice will escalate to violence outside of the ring. NAKOM (World Premiere - Panorama) the first film from Ghana to ever play the Berlinale

$

NAKOM (World Premiere - Panorama) is a historic film - the first film from Ghana to ever play the Berlinale, and the first feature film made in the Kusaal language.  Inspired by the pull of Western modern life in a remote African farming village, NAKOM is a tremendous achievement.

After his father's sudden death, Iddrisu, a talented medical student, returns to Nakom, his home village in northern Ghana, to repay a debt that threatens to destroy his family. Over the course of a growing season, Iddrisu confronts both the tragedy and beauty of village life, and must finally choose between two very different futures - one for himself in the city, or one for his family and entire village.

NAKOM is an intimate yet universal story, full of remarkable characters; about one man's search for independence while feeling the pull of responsibility for his family; about the contrasts and ironies of contemporary life versus traditional, ancient village ways. While the actual village of Nakom does not have electricity or running water, Facebook is accessible on mobile phones.

Star Jacob Ayanaba is a revelation among a cast of talented non-actors, nearly all from Nakom, and exquisite cinematography captures the dramatic seasonal transformation of the arid desert landscape to rain soaked fertile farmland.

A Ghanaian-American co-production, NAKOM was conceived by writers Isaac Adakudugu (a native of the title village) and TW Pittman (who lived and worked there with the US Peace Corps before becoming a filmmaker), and realized by U.S.-based directors Pittman and Kelly Daniela Norris.

YOU'LL NEVER BE ALONE (World Premiere - Panorama) marks the striking directorial film debut of internationally known Chilean musician Alex Anwandter. Inspired by the 2012 real life hate murder of a gay teen in Chile that galvanized the nation, Anwandter has written and directed a powerful film about a homophobic assault that elegantly traces the aftermath's effect on a family, and an estranged father's moving attempts to reconcile and help his son.

Trailer

Featuring a nuanced lead performance from newcomer Andrew Bargsted (in his feature film acting debut), who perfectly captures the adolescent dreams and ambitions of a young gender fluid man whose wish for a vibrantly queer life without prejudice collides with a brutal reality.  Also starring one of Chile's most celebrated veteran actors, Sergio Hernández ("No", "Gloria") as the father, YOU'LL NEVER BE ALONE captures a vibrant Latin American world of LGBT struggle, masculine violence, and one family's search for redemption.

Synopsis:

Introverted Juan, manager of a mannequin factory, lives alone with his eighteen-year-old gay son, Pablo. Whilst Pablo blithely studies dance, Juan is hoping that, after twenty-five years at the firm, his boss will consider him for a partnership. When Pablo is badly wounded in a brutal homophobic attack which sees him hospitalized, his father realises just how far they have become estranged. A lack of witnesses and expensive medical bills force Juan to leave the quiet stability of his life for good and reposition himself in a world where there is discrimination. Time and again his efforts come to nought, until one night on the streets of Santiago he makes up his own rules in order to save his son.

In March 2012 the murder of an openly gay Chilean man, Daniel Zamudio, by neo-Nazis, shocked the whole of Latin America. This incident inspired Alex Anwandter to make his impressively multi-layered debut. Demonstrating great sensitivity, he traces in the figure of the reclusive father the enormous pressure that exists to adhere to the fixed norms of masculinity - only to dissolve these norms in Pablo's dream of living a life that is vibrantly queer.

Said writer/director Anwandter, "About three years ago, a 20-year-old boy was murdered in Santiago because he was gay. By coincidence, that young boy was a fan of my work as a musician and I knew who he was because we'd spoken a couple of times. I met his family and they urged me to continue "speaking on behalf of boys like him", not usually represented in the media or even art: in short, a gay and poor kid. This story, however, shifts its focus onto the father of the boy. This is my way of saying: it was not only one boy, it's many boys and girls, and women and men. And the life we should examine more carefully is not only the boys, it's the rest of us too. We who allow this to repeat over and over."

Filmmaker Bio:

Alex Anwandter is a Chilean musician and filmmaker born in Santiago, Chile in 1983. His career as a musician started in 2005 to immediate and widespread acclaim in Chile and South America. He went on to publish four albums to critical and commercial recognition and subsequent touring the US, Europe and Latin America, becoming one of Chile's most renowned artists. Growing up as a big cinephile, Alex Anwandter took on directing music videos for his own projects and other artists since 2005. Named by TIME Magazine as an artist "poised for US stardom", his music and videos have been featured everywhere from Billboard to Vice Magazine and MTV, with NPR celebrating his video for 'Cómo puedes vivir contigo mismo?', a homage to Paris is Burning, for its courageous message of equality and non-discrimination.

In 2012 Alex Anwandter began preparing for a new phase in his career: moved by the murder of young Daniel Zamudio, a gay boy murdered in a hate-crime in Santiago and fan of his work, Anwandter wrote his first script YOU'LL NEVER BE ALONE. The film won both SANFIC's and FICGuadalajara Work in Progress sections and will World Premiere at Berlinale's Panorama

Czech director Petr Vaclav premieres his latest drama WE ARE NEVER ALONE (Forum - World Premiere) at the Berlinale

Critically acclaimed Czech director Petr Vaclav premieres his latest drama WE ARE NEVER ALONE (Forum - World Premiere) at the Berlinale.

This ensemble allegory follows the surprisingly interconnected lives of a group of very different people struggling to survive, each in their own way, in a small town in the Czech provinces: a paranoid prison guard, his hypochondriac neighbor and his wife who holds a shocking secret, their hardened children, a lovesick nightclub manager, and a stripper who is a single mother.  Like a domino effect, each person's actions unknowingly trigger consequences for them all.

Employing both color and black & white imagery to startling effect, and an intriguing fractured narrative, Vaclav dares to create an existential, yet humane social drama - and explore how power affects humanity in our modern world.

Said Vaclav, "No one is ever alone - we are always connected. We all live with others: some we dominate, some dominate us. The weaker submit to the stronger, the imitators to the originators, lovers to their beloved. This is a film about our time."

Limited advance screener links available upon request.

Writer/director Petr Vaclav is available for interviews at the Berlinale upon request.

Synopsis:

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the Czech provinces, a handful of people come together: a paranoid prison guard, his hypochondriac neighbour and the latter's silent, despairing wife, a lovesick nightclub manager and a stripper who is a single mum. Here, peace, joy and hope are just slogans on a T-shirt. Although they live on a connecting road, life offers them nothing but dead ends. Yet brighter colours are soon mixed in to their black and white everyday existence. The encounters between the characters bear witness to rebellion and irrational hopes, as well as cruelty. The depiction of this milieu shifts between the realistic and the bizarre. The forest setting, the many tracking shots and streets, lend the action an almost metaphorical note. Where are we really, and where are we heading? In this film, the provinces are more than just a stronghold of quirky, yet sympathetic individuals; they are a frame of mind, a self-righteous need to set oneself apart from anything different. Your father is afraid of diseases, mine is afraid of people, says the prison guard's son to the hypochondriac's son.

WHO IS ODA JAUNE? (World Premiere - Perspektive Deutsches Kino) documentary portrait of German-Bulgarian painter

WHO IS ODA JAUNE? (World Premiere - Perspektive Deutsches Kino) is a complicated, surprising documentary portrait of German-Bulgarian painter Oda Jaune - whose contemporary paintings defy categorization to explore a vast range of moving and often disturbing imagery: pregnant men, faceless naked bodies, perverse figures, joyful creatures and flying people all exist side by side.

And like her paintings, Jaune herself is cloaked in mystery, refusing to easily ascribe meaning to her work. She is a beautiful sphinx, enigmatic, inscrutable, a woman of few words, preferring to let her unforgettable imagery speak for her.

In filmmaker Kamilla Pfeffer's documentary, she explores her own complicated tension with her intensely private subject, to fascinating effect. During their collaboration, Oda Jaune has regrets about being documented, withdraws, and refuses to comply. Pfeffer proceeds with caution, attempting to make something visible out of Jaune's fragility and secrecy.

WHO IS ODA JAUNE? is a film about the delicate act of painting, the act of documentary filmmaking as a provocation, and an ambitious attempt to capture an enigmatic artist in her prime.

WHO IS ODA JAUNE?

(Wer ist Oda Jaune?)

Starring: Oda Jaune, Lars Edinger, Thomas Ostermeier, Jonathan Meese

Festival Screenings:

Sun Feb 14 19:30, CinemaxX 3
Mon Feb 15 12:00, Colosseum 1
Mon Feb 15 20:30, CinemaxX 1

Synopsis:

Sometimes she paints gelatinous fairies, pregnant men, amorphous bodies. At other times joyful beings, creatures in paradise and flying people emerge on her canvasses. Monstrosity and tenderness lie side by side in Oda Jaune's paintings, just as they disturb and move those that view them. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1979, she studied at the Arts Academy in Düsseldorf and became a star pupil of Jörg Immendorff. She also became his wife. After her husband's death she moved to Paris to pursue her work there. Her gallerist also represented Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

A film biography about a young artist as successful as she is shy? The painter would not have allowed that. Nor was it sought by the filmmaker. Instead, we are given an account of a complicated encounter. During their collaboration the protagonist repeatedly has qualms, withdraws and refuses to comply. For her part, the filmmaker deploys cautious manoeuvres in order to make visible something of Oda Jaune's fragile act of painting, without damaging it in the process nor resorting to trite illustration.

Filmmaker Bio:

Director Kamilla Pfeffer, born in Germany in 1982, studied political science and Romance philology in Mainz and Strasbourg before she began the documentary filmmaking and photography program at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2009. 'Who Is Oda Jaune?' is her feature directorial debut, and also her graduate thesis. She is also a freelance journalist and a script consultant for documentary films.

“Compositions are my children. They just grow up faster.”

Kaija Saariaho is the most internationally recognized Finnish modern composer. Her compositions are performed worldwide all the time. During the filming of this portrait Saariaho is in her early sixties, and she ponders upon her life on the couches of her Paris and Helsinki homes.

How did the sound sensitive and shy child grow up to be a successful composer? Notes on Saariaho shows us an honest and straight-forward woman, who needs light to compose and thinks listening to her own works is awkward.
We meet her family, which has always been a natural partner in her work. With her husband, the composer Jean-Baptiste Barrière, the work and marriage intertwine. They also collaborate with their grown-up children, Aleksi and Aliisa. The children are both working and studying elsewhere, but now they have all gathered to spend Christmas in Finland.

IF YOU MISSED THE OPENING with Hail Caesar: here is another recap

Berlin 66 opened rousingly on Thursday, February 11 with multiple screenings of the new Coen Bros. Hollywood send-up "Hail Caesar" and a turn away overflow press conference crowd for the Jury led by Meryl Streep which was an event in itself. Day one, one might say, was all about  Streep, the Coen Brothers and actor George Clooney in his best jesting form and looking great in a slick black leather jacket at the Hail Caesar press conference table.

First off, a few words about the film. Manohla Dargis, in her sparkling NY Times review hit the nail squarely on the head when she called the film an "off center comedy" ~ as off center (flip-floppily structured) as it gets with chuckles and belly laughs all the way. To put it mildly, this in not the Co' Brothers most serious film, but it is arguably their funniest ever with a string of brilliant off-beat pearls by actors all of whom shine in their unexpected off-the-wall castings.  Basically this is a spoof of fifties Hollywood but much more than that, loaded with absurd humor of the kind that almost harks back  the Marx Brothers era.

One at a time:

Jeff Brolin, tremendous as the blustering bigger than life studio head draped in a double breasted suit and topped with a bulky fedora, who regularly unloads his guilt in the catholic confessional box;

Clooney as a clueless movie star who gets kidnapped by the Communists  and walks around through the whole picture clad in his clanky starring role Julius Caesar paraphernalia, down to leather sandals with protruding toes;

Scarlet Johansson as a snarling sinful take on Fifties simon-pure superstar bathing beauty, Ester Williams!;

Channing Tatum leading a bunch of sailors in white in a sly slightly homoerotic take on a Gene Kelly MGM dance number -- to me, the highlight of the picture with surprisingly adept tap dancing, jumping from table to table -- this section had me stomping along to the beat in my seat --

New face Alden Ehrenreich as an hilarilious acrobatic Roy Rogers ripoff whistling to his white horse then doing handstands in the saddle pursued by the bad guys -- and performing incredible rope magic, even with a strand of  spaghetti in a restaurant for his girlriend --but  this is only Half of cowboy star "Hobie Doyle's comedic turn -- he is next engaged to fill in for an ailing actor in a drawing room drama exchanging ten gallon cowboy headgear for a tux and Bow tie, and called upon to mouth a bit of sophisticated dialogue which is like a foreign tongue to him -- the extended scene where his English director (Ralph Fiennes) patiently re-shoots his flubbed entry scene over and over painfully correcting  the perplexed actor's stumbling delivery of his single line -- (t'were as though...) -- is a real rib tickler.

Another highlight  in this linkup of comical skits strung together by the ridiculous premise of Caesar discovering God on his knees at the foot of Jesus on the cross --the whole "Hail Caesar" business being a kind of takeoff  on early fifties religious extravaganzas such as "The Robe" -- A satire of all-powerful Hollywood Gossip columnists who could make or break careers -- such as Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper, both played sniffingly by Tilda Swinton --- All in all a hilarious piece of extra savvy entertainment and a glorious procession of contemporary stars revealing unexpected comedic chops --

Well, okay, it did get to be a bit much by the end, but a very good time was had by me -- if not by All -- of the serious minded film critics and international press people around me.

As far as I could tell from my front and center first row seat,  I was the only one in the entire audience to burst out laughing or constantly snickering throughout the proceedings. I'll just hafta see it again with a native American audience to appreciate the collective cackle noticeably absent at this ultra-sober festival screening.

The crammed over flow press conference after the screening was almost equally comical. One Polish gal addressed a long long long question to Gorgeous George, who finally replied: "Are you flirting with me? ~ it won't work because I'm a married man now!" ~  which brought a roar of glee from the house. Most questions were, in fact, addressed to Clooney, who between sly quips that brought smiles from his colleagues at the table, finally summed it all up by saying that it was a privilege to work with such talented directors as the Coens, and above all -- FUN all the way.

On the serious side one woman expressed the view that with the refugee crisis now besetting Europe, shouldn't  people "in the  public eye", such as the Coen Brothers, be making films on that subject?  Josh Coen responded with due respect, but firmly, that it is not the job of filmmakers to engage in politics but rather to be true to their art ~ and that is hard enough.

As for the other big event of the day, the jury press conference was basically orchestrated by Jury president Meryl Streep looking demurely majestic at center table. She noted that this was her very first time ever to sit on a film jury, let alone as president, and that she was very much looking forward to this new experience. Questioned as to the lack of empowerment of women in the film  industry she pointed out that this jury was predominantly female -- four women out of a team of seven. Clive Owen sitting next her was asked if, as an actor, he would be paying more attention to the acting than anything else in making his judgements. To this his reply was "No"--what counts for him is the overall effect of the picture, not just the acting. English film critic Nick James of the prestigious film journal Sight and Sound observed that it is quite a rare thing for a critic to be seated on a jury such as this, and felt honored to be so chosen. A chinese woman asked Ms. streep if, having acted recently alongside a major Chinese actor, she has started seeing more Chinese cinema. Not really, said the American actress -- "I can't even keep up with all the films friends of mine are in!" -- La Streep obviously has many friends in the business.

A promotional and educational project which brings together talented European documentary film producers

The main objective of the workshop is to interconnect talented European producers with film professionals, especially those working in documentary cinematography. We believe that such project can open a discussion about current European production system, its efficiency and limits, and perhaps contribute to identify its unused or yet undiscovered possibilities.

The project should also provide the participants with an easy access to information in the field of audiovision, deeper and wider orientation in the film market but also helped them establish contacts with producers from other countries, and thus increase the potential of future European coproduction projects.
